'Horsham District Health Rides' are free social rides for adults who enjoy, or want to start enjoying, cycling. They are a great way to improve your cycling ability, socialise with others and develop new skills. You don’t need to be an Olympian, just in possession of a working bicycle with the ability to ride.

All rides will be led by experienced volunteer ride leaders. There will be a choice of four regular routes, including a 6km Shelley route and longer two to three hour rides, including cafe stops, along the Downs Link, to Sumner's Pond, around Warnham and on Pedlar's Way to Southwater. A hybrid bike is suitable for all rides but road bikes can be used for “on road “ rides.

General Information

AGE/ABILITY - Riders of all abilities, including beginners and returners. There are no age parameters but it is expected most riders will be aged over 50 years

BENEFITS - Enjoyment, fresh air, scenic landscapes, opportunity to socialise, healthy physical activity, personal improvement and moral support from trained leaders

RIDE LEADERS - all are trained volunteers

RISK - all rides in the programme have been properly risk assessed

EQUIPMENT - Bring a bike that is in good working order, especially with two working brakes. The bringing and wearing of a helmet is recommended. Also recommended to bring a drink and snack

If you do not have a bike in good working order it may be possible to lend you one – let Ian Ford know if this is the case (below)

RIDING TIPS - (1) Optimum seat height to avoid strain on knees, muscles and back is to sit on the seat when stationary and for balls of feet to just reach the ground at a stretch; (2) optimum position for feet on pedals is for balls of feet to rest on the middle of each pedal; (3) lower your gear on the approach to an uphill section rather than when on it, so as to avoid stopping or the greater challenge of changing gear when the chain is in tension

IMPORTANT NOTE - Also see ‘Terms and Conditions’ on registration form (see under 'Booking' above)
