The Horsham District Secondary Schools U13 Individual Table Tennis Championships took place at Collyer's on Friday, attracting a field of 11 competitors. A monrad tournament was used to ensure that competitors continued to play games even if they lost at any point. Rahil RF was the one player to avoid losing at any stage and thereby take the gold medal. After a bye in the first round the Tanbridge year 8 student dealt with Henry S and brother Zaib in ruthless fashion before negotiating a tough challenge in the final versus Forest School year 8 lad Billy J. In a best of seven set encounter Rahil went 3-0 up before Billy struck back by winning the next two to deuce. Rahil showed his experience in the sixth however, taking it 11-7 to win through.
There were a number of other notable performances in the event. Zaib RF, the youngest competitor, showed excellent endeavour to beat the Weald's Harry L in a deciding set in the first round before causing a shock by beating another Wealder, Jude L, in a brilliant second round five setter to deuce in the final set. Forest mates Sam M and Logan N also enjoyed a ding donger in the second round, Sam just squeezing through in the decider.
The L plate brigade of Harry, Leon and Steve all came together in the second phase by virtue of being the three to suffer first round defeats and all having surnames beginning with L. Harry won the mini round-robin between them and Leon although winning sets against both was consigned to bottom spot.
Well done to Forest year 7 Henry S for showing great attitude in the face of tough and more experienced opposition in his matches and good on yer too to Chloe R, another primary school and underage entrant and the only girl in the pack on the night. She competed well, especially in hitting through Logan N before going down to Jude L 3-1 in the fifth place play-off.
