10/3/20 - Horsham District Year 3+4 Primary Schools Basketball Festival: Shells in Shock Mode

Shelley School won the year 3 and 4 football competition at The Bridge yesterday attended by eight teams from four schools: Southwater, Arunside, Shelley and Holbrook. There was some excellent play in the three-a-side format. Shelley's two teams, A and B, topped their first round groups with Arunside A and Southwater taking second spots to join them in second phase Division A. The lower teams fed into a Division B which Arunside topped by virtue of beating Southwater B in the head to head between them after they finished level on points. Shelley A took the Division A title after beating main rivals Southwater A in a great final game 8-4 in a game that stood at 4-4 at half time. Great spirit and fair play from all children involved.

6/3/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division B, meet 5): A Great Season's Primary TT Ends With Individual Comps

Division B of the Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League ended at Collyer's yesterday with four individual events providing the focus, the team event having wrapped up last week. Players were allocated according to quotas dictated by entry level per school. Jason B (Southwater) swept through the top tier like a dose of salts. Caleb B from Greenway met him in the final but was powerless to restrain him in a game that finished 21-10.

Another Southwater lad, Oliver S, triumphed in the B Event beating Owen from Kingslea 21-14 in the final. Harry L was another chip off the Southwater block coming through to win the C tier beating Kingslea's Christian D in a one-sided final.

A Southwater monopoly was avoided by the narrowest of margins when Matt B from Jolesfield beat Southwater's Harry E 21-20 in an exciting match.

All the Div B players this season deserve great credit for some great play and sportsmanship. Looking forward to seeing most strut their stuff in next year's Div A!

4/3/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division A, meet 5): Super Match Concludes Netball Division A

The last meeting of Division A of the netball league concluded on Wednesday at Collyer's. The title had already been decided the previous week, champions Southwater weren't due to play and both Greenway teams were absent due to other commitments. So there was every excuse for a damp squib but as it turned out Heron Way A and Plaistow/Kirdford A contested an extended match and it turned out to be a cracker, 17-12 in Plaistow/Kirdford favour, just enough to tip the runners-up claim their way level on points but goal difference deciding.

3/3/20 - Horsham District Year 3 and 4 Introductory Tag Rugby Event

10 teams took part in the Year 3 and 4 Horsham District Primary Schools Introductory Tag Rugby Festival on Tuesday 3rd March at Horsham Rugby Club. Almost 100 boys and girls arrived in an array of team colours proudly wearing their tag belts ready to play in some fun, friendly matches. During the two hour event, each of the 10 teams played six matches to help develop their throwing and catching skills and understand more about the rules of Tag Rugby.

The matches were refereed by Sports Leaders from Collyers and there were also Sports Leaders from Bohunt School in Horsham that provided support including helping as touch judges on the four pitches that were in use. No scores were kept from the games as the Festival was organised to provide the children with a fun experience and to help develop their knowledge and understanding of the game but everyone went home smiling and hopefully some of them will have been enthused enough to go on to join a local rugby club.

28/2/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division B, Meet 4): Southwater A Win Div B TT Title

Southwater A and B teams completed their much awaited top of the table clash together on Friday at Collyer's in the Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League Division B. It was a little bit of a damp squib as the A team of Jason B, Callum C, Oliver T and Jacob W proceeded to steamroller their schoolmates to assert alphabetical order and take the title 22 points clear. Well done Southwater B for keeping the title in question until the last week.

Kingslea A gained another two team wins to consolidate their third place position. Greenway felt the force from them first, only Finn V providing resistance, before Jolesfield posted a stiffer test that finished 31-25.

Kingslea B also had a late surge beating Jolesfield slightly easier than their first team before signing off with a big win over Holbrook.

Holbrook and Kingslea C enjoyed the only draw of the league when they met. Frankie W led Holbrook from the front and Olivia B was Kingslea C's best performer. Holbrook's 16 points against Kingslea B compatred to Kingslea C's 12 versus Southwater B enabled them to overhaul them by one point to avoid the bottom spot.

Well done to all for a great team event and here's looking forward to next week for the last week individual events.

26/2/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball (Division B4, meet 2):

Division B4 of the primary schools netball league was the latest and last to wrap-up before the second tier play-off meetings. St Robert Southwell A started the second meeting in second spot having played a match less but soon made their class tell with resounding wins over their own B team and St Peter's Cowfold. North Heath earned the right to contest the final with them courtesy of a 5-4 win over St Peter's but in the night's play-off final weren't able to make a dent in the St Roberts armour.

Plaistow and Kirdford B came third after drawing the third place play-off with St Robs B but having a better record in the league to get the nod. St Peter's brought up the rear despite their plucky effort versus the North Heathians.

25/2/20 - Horsham Area Sports Hall Athletics Competition (Year 5+6, Collyer's): Winds of Success Continue to Blow in a Southerly Direction

It's turning into a good sporting week for Southwater Junior Academy. Yesterday it was a win in the dodgeball, today they took the year 5+6 indoor athletics, tomorrow they just might conquer the world in something! Today's athletics success was earned at Collyer's where they emerged with the most points out of a field of 11 school teams that entered.

Collyer's provided a particularly good set of student sports leaders to support event director Dave Ingram. The results were ready before the children were corralled to sit down for the end presentation. Normally Dave has to fill time with his thumbs challenge for the children.

24/2/20 - Horsham District Primary Dodgeball Tournament: Southwater Are The New Sheriffs in Dodge City

A super primary schools dodgeball competition proceeded at Farlington School yesterday. Only five teams from three schools took part because an inset day precluded some others from entering but nevertheless what was shorter than usual on quantity was made up with quality. As expected Southwater A and Heron Way went toe to toe in contesting for supremacy. Holders Heron Way were a well drilled squad again but Southwater B provided an early banana skin holding them to a 2-2 draw. Southwater A then went down 2-1 to the Herons, so nothing straight-forward at this particular event then.

However after their early wobble the Southies hit a rich vein of form and there were no further slip ups. Heron Way also stabilized nicely and all culminated in the key game when the two met for the second time. This time it was Southwater that prevailed by a 2-0 margin, a scoreline that masked some second set drama where the Herons looked likely to have more players left on court by time to level proceedings to a draw up until a few last second throws and catches changed the numbers narrowly to Southwater's advantage.

Plucky Southwater B, who finished in third spot, made their A team work hard for a 2-1 victory in their penultimate game before bottom team Southwater C were swept away 5-0 to confirm Southwater A's title acquisition.

At the other end of the table it was brilliant to see Leechpool take their dodgeball bow in such enthusiastic fashion. The only won one out of their eight games but each time they won a set they celebrated like they'd won the whole event. Southwater C finished fifth and a particular well done to Jordi at the heart of their team for a rousing individual display to keep his team's spirits high despite some adverse results.

7/2/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division B, meeting 2): Caleb in Belting Form, Southwater Teams Neck and Neck At The Top

Week 2 of the Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League Division B brought some more excellent matches as the players settled more into the format of the matches. Good to see Greenway making their entry after being absent last week. They had Caleb B leading their late-starting campaign, the Horsham TTC trained youngster winning all four of his matches. They nudged past Kingslea C as Finn V, Tabitha K and Lewis F all contributed behind their main strike weapon. Kingslea B proved tougher however and only Lewis F could add to Caleb's wins as they went down 30-22.

At the top there is the familiar sight of Southwater sailing ahead but this time it's two of their teams excelling. Southwater B won maximum first week courtesy of Greenway defaulting but this on this second outing they did not need any favours as they impressively took out Kingslea A, only suffering one reverse as they did so, and then put a young Holbrook to the sword in maximal fashion. Southwater A was equally majestic in dealing with the Kingslea A and B teams but suffered two losses against the Kingslea front side and therefore lies just behind their B team in the table. No doubt sparks will fly when the two Southwatrer teams meet in the final round in two weeks' time.

Despite taking their share of Southwater punishment on the second night Kingslea B lead the chasing pack courtesy of gaining their second win over Greenway. Well done to Aayan A, not only for having 4 A's in his abbreviated six-letter name but for also winning both of his Greenway encounters. Aayan's teammates all add one to his two to get over the line. Kingslea A dropped a couple of places in the table as a consequence of their Week 2 woes but will take consolation from knowing they won't need to face a Southwater team again this season.

Good to see Holbrook get their first win and a good one too over an improving Jolesfield outfit. Frankie W led the way and received important support by Alex C and Jamie H with one success each towards the victory. Jolesfield on their part bounced back well with a 34-22 victory over Kingslea C, Alex P and Matt B both winning their two matches. They now sit fourth.

5/2/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division B3, meeting 2): Warnham Win Through

Another good night for Warnham in Division B3 of the primary schools netball league as they went through unbeaten again to top the group and qualify the winning teams play-off final in the second tier. Unlike last time when an All Saints double absence linked to illness issues reduced the night to an extended single fixture this second meeting did involve a full workload. Heron Way B made them work for a 5-2 victory first-up and then All Saints A became the first team to deny them maximum points in a great match that ended up 2-2. All Saints B did allow Warnham a comfortable run in however going down 12-0.

Heron Way B preserved their second placed status despite going down 6-1 to All Saints' front side after smashing their second team 15-2. All Saints A also beat their B team more comfortably but despite their impressive showing they had to be content with third place, chiefly as a consequence of their first meeting no-show.

5/2/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Swimming Gala: Allstars and St Mary's Horsham Teams Win Honours at Primary Schools Swim Gala

A fabulous Horsham Primary Schools Swimming Gala at Pavilions in the Park this afternoon saw well over 100 young swimmers strut their stuff this afternoon in front of a large audience of watching parents. As usual there were two team events to be contested - an A event open to club and non-club swimmers and a B event restricted to non-club swimmers only. The A event saw eight teams in action filling the eight lanes of the pool just nicely; the B event had 11 entrants so required two heats for every race.

In total this meant there were 24 starts and finishes for the organisers - Bohunt sports leaders on timing, Collyer's sports leaders on starting and results, Atlantis Swim Club's head coach Andy Lobley and HDSD's Ian Ford doing all the worrying that things would go well after recruiting all the teams for it - to negotiate, very nicely as it happened.

In the A event the Allstars made an inauspicious start by gaining six points in a third place finish in the opening 50 metres freestyle race. From that point there was no-stopping the team made up of swimmers from three different schools - St Peter's Cowfold, Shjelley and Northolmes - as they proceeded to win all seven following races to gain maximum points and take the title. The most contentious thing about their victory is how they will share the winner's trophy around to reflect each school's relative contribution. Nice to see a bit of inter-school cooperation not just enabling participation.

Heron Way came second with 50 points, not winning a race but never dropping below fourth place in any of the four individual races or four team relays. All Saints narrowly missed out on silver, one point behind and indeed also never dropping below fourth place. Last year's winners St Mary's Pulborough put in a good defence of their title but had to be content with fourth place on 30 points, one ahead of joint fifth-placed Arunside and St Mary's Horsham.

And talking of St Mary's Horsham, the saints came marching home to win the B event coming out on top of an excellent tussle with last year's B winners Southwater and the other St Mary's team in the field, Pulborough. With two races remaining two maximum point hauls plus big contributions from three second places had put St Mary's in a commanding five point lead over the Southies but just one in front of the Pulbies. Two fourth placed finishes in the last races were not exactly what St Mary's Horsham would have desired to settle their nerves, especially as Pulborough overtook them on points after coming second in the penultimate race and Southwater gained one with a third place.

Thankfully for St Mary's Horsham, their Pulborough namesakes effectively stumbled at the last hurdle with a sixth place finish, their lowest position in any race, and whilst Southwater valiantly gained maximum points with a first it still left them one point adrift and level pegging with Pulborough. You can't get more exciting than that.

St Peter's Cowfold just missed out on adding to their share of the A event glory but nevertheless presented themselves another small school prepared to mix it with the bigger boys. Shelley A took fifth and All Saints sixth.

Thanks to everyone involved - participants, team staff, spectators, organisers - for contributing to an afternoon of primary school sport at its best.

31/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division B, meeting 1): Southwater Take Early Lead, Kingslea in Pursuit, Parents Run Out of Puff

There was some great play in the first meeting of five for the Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League Division B on Friday at Collyer's. Seven teams kickstarted their campaigns but unfortunately there was a no-show from Greenway which meant a parents team had to be pulled together impromptu to deputise against Southwater B. Initially there was an opportunity to practice playing the format. All teams rose to the demands of the process excellently and in future weeks will be required to fit in two matches on each night.

Southwater A wasted no time in putting down a marker against a spirited Jolesfield team from Partridge Green. Southwater won all eight of the matches involved but Jolesfield claimed bonus points, awarded for scoring 50% or more of the opponent's winning score, in seven of them. Alex P came close, 21-19, to recording a shock against Southwater's numero uno Jason B. Jensen C and Matt B were also highly competitive and Louie EC also caused Jason B a problem or two.

Kingslea A were also impressive beating a young Holbrook team in fine style with Charlie L and Talha M coming away with a brace of wins apiece but Isaac J and Matt B had to be content with one each as Frankie W stood up to be counted for the Holbrookers. Young Jamie H took 15 points against Charlie L to show his promise and give optimism for future weeks.

Kingslea B managed to slightly outdo their first team by carrying off a 37-14 victory over the Kingslea C team. Ciaran W was resister in chief for the Cs, winning one and coming close in another, but Zach H, Ryan S, Ayaan A and Cristian D will be pleased with their first night's work.

Southwater B took no prisoners when it came to dealing with the collective of dads assembled to engage them in the absence of Greenway. A. Charlie W and Oliver T were both imperious, the latter not even conceding bonus points such was the ruthlessness he displayed. After five games Southwater were five wins to the good before Paul Craycraft and Steve Lawrence managed to salvage a small measure of respectability to the score with two close victories.

29/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division A, meeting 3): Southwater Power On But Plaistow and Kirdford Make Them Work Hard

Third third meeting of the primary schools netball league ran at Collyer's on Wednesday. Southwater consolidated their top spot with another two wins. Lowly Greenway A got hit hard 12-1 but Plaistow and Kirdford proved a different kettle of fish putting up solid resistance to go down 11-6 in a great match and thus bolster their kitty with a bonus point that helps keep their runners-up ambitions alive along with their 11-1 despatch of Greenway B. In the all Greenway battle it was the B team who overturned alphabetical logic in winning out 6-3 to consign their stablemates to the basement placement.

29/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Badminton Matchplay Competition: Warnies Do Wonders in the Badminton Tournament

Warnham are at the top of the Horsham District Primary Schools badminton world after winning two of the divisions, A and B, contested at today's team tournament at The Bridge Leisure Centre. St Mary's Pulborough scooped the Division C winners gong on their debut outing in the annual event. The competition involved 12 teams and 25 players from four schools - St Mary's Pulborough, Southwater, Warnham and Northolmes - and the behaviour, skills and spirit of all the players (all boys for some strange reason!) was exemplary. Waiting players umpired games and there were few problems.

In the first round of matches the two-man teams were split into four groups of three and positions in them informed which division each team would play in in the second phase of the competition. Group B was the closest with the top two, Warnham B and Southwater C, sharing a 14-all draw and thus top spot depending on the margin of each's win over St Mary's Pulborough A, the Southies shading it by a mere three points therefore.

Northolmes and Pulborough teams occupied all the first round group third places and so contested Division C. All games were close but the Pulbies squeezed through to contest a final in which the B team came out victorious 25-19. Well done to Will E and Robbie NJ.

Division B saw all Warnham and all Southwater semi-finals contested to produce a Warnham B versus Southwater B climax. It turned out to be a nip and tuck affair which the Warnham pair of George H and Oliver W won by 15 to 14. Exciting stuff.

And so to the top tier. Southwater C paid no respect to alphabetical order by ending Southwater A's hopes of glory at semi-stage but Warnham A were never going to be as forgiving to their D team. Thus a Southwater C versus Warnham A final ensued to provide another exciting tussle and one won 21-19 by the latter of the two. Salutations to Freddie H and Jack F.

28/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Year 3+4 Sports Hall Athletics Competition: Herons Get their Way in Year 3+4 Sports Hall Athletics

It was a busy scene at Collyer's today as 11 teams and over 200 year 3+4 children convened for for first of this year's sports hall athletics events. With Forest School's sports hall out of action for roof repairs all entries have had to be channelled into the two Collyer's events, hence the packed in approach. However head coach Dave Ingram supported by a brilliantly able and committed crew of Collyer's sports leaders were up to the task and Heron Way was the school that emerged victorious achieving a top total of 520 points, 24 in front of nearest rival Southwater.

24/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division A, Pairs Competition): Charlie and Zaib Show Pairs Power

Another night of super table tennis to finish this year's primary schools table tennis Division A. Proceedings came to a close with a pairs competition involving matches up to 31 points within a 12-minute timeframe and each pair changing over when the score of 15 was reached in the game. A number of new Southwater players attended because some regulars were involved in a singing competition and one of them, Charlie, paired up with the relatively experienced (at nine years old!) Zaib Rehman-Furs to win yet another pot of gold for their school.

Greenway lads James R and Aston W did well to get into the final but never really applied any pressure at the last hurdle in a game that ended 31-15 pointing South.

Lucas M and Blaise W took third in a close match against Billingshurst's Luca V and Josh N and Harvey and Hamish won the all-Southwater battle with Joe and Harry to claim fifth.

22/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division B2, meeting 2): Groundhog Day in Netball Division B2

The second meeting of the Horsham District Netball League Division B2 turned out to be an almost perfect replica of the first meeting before Christmas with all results going the same way, the only 'imperfection' being Kingslea B gaining a bonus point in the table by virtue of getting five goals in their loss to Kingslea A who scored eight, meaning that they superseded the 50% or more scoring threshold that guides bonus points for losing teams. Leechpool was the chief beneficiary of the status quo maintenance, securing another three wins to finish on maximum points ahead of Southwater B who won all their games except for the ones against Leechpool.

Last time Leechpool beat them 10-1, this time 8-0 was the margin. All teams will now feed into end of season play-off games in relation to what placing they achieved in the table.

17/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division A, Individual Competition): Ade Crashes the Ping Pong Party

Adrian R made a spectacular debut at the Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League Division A Individual Championships on Friday at Collyer's. The individual competition opened the way for year 5 North Heath School pupil to make his entry and he did so with a full house of six wins to come through as champion within the top Tier A, edging out the much fancied Chloe R (Southwater) 21-18 in the key match which proved to be one of the highest quality with some super rallies. Well done too to Jason B (Southwater) for a fine showing to secure third spot just in front of school colleague Zaib RF

In the middle Tier B Southwater claimed the top two spots. Sam A was always in command winning all six of his matches in fine style. Teammate Ajaiy A took second by virtue of his head-to-head win with Zac B from Holbrook, 21-14. Harvey L (Southwater) had got more points in 17 than anyone else versus Sam A and he took fourth with a narrow head-to-head win, 21-18, over Luca V from Billingshurst.

With eight participants the lower Tier C was organised in two initial round-robin groups to inform the play-off games that decided final placings. Holbrook's Oliver B and Greenway's James R emerged unscathed from their respective groups but in the final they played James R hit top form to emerge an easy winner 21-10. Third place was a much tighter affair clinched 21-19 by George W (Holbrook) over Chris G (Billingshurst). Bobby B (Southwater) took fifth and Florry K beat Billingshurst teammate Ben S in the seveth spot decider.

Another night of great play, super spirit and excellent behaviour from the children involved.

17/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Hockey League: Southwater Pip North Heath to Claim Hockey Title

The third and final meeting of the 2019/20 Horsham District Primary Schools Hockey League took place on Friday 17th January on a chilly winter evening. 14 teams were scheduled to arrive but an hour before the scheduled start a call was received informing event organiser Paul Taylor that the three teams from Steyning would not be able to attend which resulted in a frantic rescheduling of the fixtures. Fortunately, this exercise was completed just before the teams started arriving at the Tanbridge School Astro pitch and the scene was set for a thrilling conclusion.

Teams were promoted and relegated at the end of the second league meeting and with Steyning A unable to take to the field it left the remaining six teams to battle it out in Division 1. The games were fiercely contested with some excellent stick control displayed and it was Southwater that emerged as champions having finished fourth the previous year. They were slow out of the blocks as they could only draw their first game 0-0 but were soon in the groove as they won 2-0 against Leechpool A, 2-0 against Kingslea and managed to beat the two-time defending champions Shelley 6-0.

North Heath A were performing almost as well as Southwater and they followed up their opening draw against Southwater with a 1-0 win against Northolmes A and a 4-0 win against Shelley before drawing 0-0 with Leechpool A. This meant that going in to the final round of fixtures, neither Southwater or North Heath A had conceded a goal, and both could end up victorious depending on the scores of their final matches. The trend of not conceding a goal continued as both teams demonstrated how good their defence was but at the same time, they were both denied winning goals and had to settle for 0-0 draws. This was enough for Southwater to finish in first place with a total of 21 points following three wins and two draws and meant they were unbeaten in the 16 games they played across the three tournaments and only conceded one goal in all those games against Leechpool A in tournament 2.

North Heath A will be disappointed that despite remaining unbeaten on the night and not conceding a goal that they only finished as runners up with 19 points but should be extremely proud of their efforts in pushing Southwater all the way to the final match of the tournament. Third and fourth place ended up being decided on goal difference as both teams finished on 17 points after winning two, drawing two and losing one game but Northolmes A (+3) pipped Leechpool A (+1) to claim third place. Kingslea finished in fifth on 11 points but it was a tough night for the two-time defending champions Shelley. Having been promoted to the top division after winning Division 2 in the second tournament, they found things a lot harder and suffered five straight defeats and only managed to score one goal as they finished sixth with 6 points. Steyning A were awarded with seventh place despite not being able to attend and things may have been very different if they had.

With the Steyning B and C teams being unable to attend it meant that the fixtures had to be amended meaning the remaining five teams played longer games on pitches three and four. Castlewood were relegated from Division 1 after finishing bottom in the second tournament but were unstoppable on the night as they won all four of their games scoring 19 goals and not conceding any as they comprehensively won Division 2 with 20 points. 4-0, 5-0 and 9-0 victories were achieved by Castlewood, but St Mary’s pushed them all the way in their fixture and only suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against them. After only having six players in the second tournament they were back up to full strength and even had the luxury of having substitutes to allow for player rotation and must be wondering if things might have been different if they had not been a player short in the previous tournament.

North Heath B clinched second spot in Division 2 as they finished on 14 points following two wins, one draw and one defeat and were involved in the most exciting game of the night as they beat St Mary’s 6-4 which ensured they finished above them. That defeat for St Mary’s meant they finished on 13 points and had to settle for third place. Leechpool B finished in fourth place after a win, a draw and two defeats saw them accumulate 10 points. Northolmes B found things difficult as they lost all four games conceding 24 goals in the process but had the satisfaction of scoring a goal in one of their games as they finished in fifth place with 5 points.

The umpires on the night were kindly provided by Horsham Hockey Club and all showed their great understanding and knowledge of the game and did a brilliant job with one of them commenting that his participation in the event when he was younger was what had inspired him to go on and join Horsham Hockey Club. For information about Horsham Hockey Club please visit https://www.horshamhockeyclub.com/ or email horshamcolts@gmail.com

The standard of hockey on display across all three league meetings was really high and shows how hard the PE staff are working in the local primary schools to run hockey clubs and provide the children with the opportunity to play, learn and develop their skills.

15/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division A, Meet 2): Southwater Power Ahead in Netball Top Tier

Southwater A continued their dominance of primary school netball league Division A last night at Collyer's with two more big wins putting them out into a clear lead in the table after the second of five meetings. Nearest challengers Heron Way A were no match for their power falling to a 13-2 defeat and Greenway B remain winless after suffering 16-1 against them. Greenway B had put up a good fight against Plaistow and Kirdford A, falling to a solitary goal and Heron Way bounced back from their first match trouncing to beat back the P+K crew from stealing their second place berth with a 6-1 win.

10/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division A, Doubles Competition): Second String Doubles Pair Rock the Southwater Boat

The Horsham Primary Schools Table Tennis League Division A got back on the road for 2020 with a doubles competition on Friday at Collyer's. Teams of four for the main team event were split down into twos and allocated between A and B event sections. Southwater 1B pair Sam A and Zaib RF threw up a shock by winning the A event by beating their school colleagues at hot favourites  Southwater 1A, Chloe R and Dan P, by 21-17, fittingly in the final match round of the evening.

Greenway 1 took third place by beating all opponents other than the two Southwater ones.

In the B event Holbrook 2 (Jamie M and Oliver B) won out by the closest of margins, winning a last point decider against Southwater 2B 21-20 to maintain their unbeaten record and consign their vanquished opponents in the last round to their first defeat and second place with it. Greenway 2 took third spot in this section as well.

10/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Hockey League (meeting 2): Southwater and Steyning in Hockey Pole Positions

The second Horsham District Primary Schools Hockey League meeting took place on Friday 10th January on the Astro pitch at Tanbridge House School. Following the first meeting in November, teams were split in to two divisions with further promotion and relegation issues to be decided in advance of the third and final meeting on 17th January.

In Division 1, Southwater were the only team to go through the night unbeaten with five wins and a draw from their six games to accumulate 28 points and top spot and only conceded one goal. Just four points separated the next five teams with Steyning A finishing in second place with 20 points with two wins, three draws and a defeat  but unusually finishing with a negative goal difference after scoring two goals but conceding three. North Heath A and Northolmes A ended up with 18 points each with Leechpool A a point behind on 17 points in fifth. Kingslea will be disappointed to finish only sixth as they only lost one game and conceded only two goals but they drew the other five games and did not end up scoring any goals which meant they finished on 16 points. Castlewood were hampered on the night by only having six players following same late drop outs due to illness and as a result lost four games, drew two and did not score a goal as they finished in seventh place with 10 points and will now compete in Division 2 in the last league meeting following their relegation.

It was extremely tight in Division 2 with the top two teams finishing level on 28 points and the next four teams all finishing on 16 points. Steyning B and Shelley drew their game 0-0 and both went on to win their remaining five games without conceding any goals to finish level at the top of the division but Steyning B pipped Shelley on goal difference after scoring ten goals compared to the five by Shelley who won all their games 1-0. Both of them secured promotion and will battle it out in Division 1 next Friday in the final league meeting. North Heath B, St Mary’s, Steyning C and Leechpool B all finished on 16 points with one win, three draws and two defeats so goal difference was used to determine final places. North Heath B secured third place after scoring five goals and conceding five goals, St Mary’s pipped Steyning C to fourth place by scoring two more goals as both finished with -2 goal difference and just a further goal adrift on -3 was Leechpool B who finished in sixth place. Northolmes B found things tough as they lost all six of their games without scoring but were not completely outplayed as four of their defeats were by a 1-0 scoreline.

Division 1: Kingslea, Leechpool A, Castlewood, Northolmes A, North Heath A, Southwater and Steyning A

Division 2: St Mary’s, Northolmes B, Steyning C, Leechpool B, North Heath B, Steyning B and Shelley

8/1/20 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division B1, meet 2): Shelley Crack Open the Nuts

Shelley School took advantage of Northolmes' absence from the second and final meeting of netball Division B1 to surpass them in the final table. They only had one match to play, an extended one versus St Andrew's Nuthurst, which they won at a canter 17-3. Despite their loss the Nutties still went up the tables themselves courtesy of default wins awarded as a consequence of both Northolmes teams being absent. All teams in this division will feed into end of season play-offs based on their final position.

11/12/19- Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division B4, meeting 1): St Rob's Looking Good in Netball Div B4

St Robert Southwell A were in fine form at tonight's opening to netball division B4 at Collyers. They only played two matches against Plaistow/Kirdford and North Heath but managed to amass 26 goals nonetheless, just conceding one in each game. Both vanquished teams picked themselves up well however, P+K beating St Peter's Cowfold 3-1 and North Heath exacting a level of revenge by beating St Rob's second team 4-0. Plaistow/Kirdford also beat St Robert Southwell B 5-3 in an exciting game and go top by one point but having played an extra game.

Slim pickings for St Peter's with two defeats but they can take consolation from relatively modest margins of defeat.

6/12/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Girls Football League (meeting 3): Spectacular Southwater Crowned Champions

This year’s Horsham District Primary School Girls Football League was completed on Friday and what an exciting climax it was. After three tournaments, 85 matches and 112 goals, it was Southwater A who walked away as the 2019 champions. Not only did Southwater A win the league but they did so in spectacular fashion, with a 100% win record and not conceding a single goal throughout the tournament.

This was a huge achievement as there were somegood teams who put in some impressive performances against them and even took point from them in a previous meeting. After topping the league in meeting 2, it was Heron Way who finished of the tournament it second place only losing one match to the eventual winners. Third place was taken by Castlewood who managed to earn 14 points. Well done to Kingslea for winning Group 2.

Fingers crossed the girls involved in the league enjoyed it and it inspires them to either continue or start playing regularly. The women’s game in growing rapidly and there are a number of opportunities for the girls to play in and around Horsham.

6/12/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division A, Week 5): Southwater Top of the TT Pops Again

No surprises, Southwater Junior Academy's A team are the team champions in Division A of the Horsham Primary Schools Table Tennis League. They notched up another two wins at the expense of the lower halves of their own B team's and Holbrook. Well done Chloe R, Dan P, Zaib RF and Sam A you've been consistently fantastic and as well as your skills on the table being responsible for the team finishing 88 points ahead of the nearest team you've played the game in a good spirit.

The battle for second place was far more exciting. Southwater B eventually won it by just seven points in front of Holbrook. Southwater B's cause was aided by their upper half's maximum win over Greenway Upper but their lower sub-section took an expected bloody nose against the might of their A team's top two. Holbrook also experienced first match mixed fortunes as their upper two smashed their Billingshurst counterparts 20-7 but their lower two were hit hard by Southwater A Lower. In the second round of matches on the night Southwater B engaged two close matches against Greenway and whilst Holbrook scored big wins over the two sides of the Billingshurst challenge it wasn't quite enough to overturn the deficit.

Blaise W continued to be the inspiration for the Greenway team with another three wins and his only loss against Florry K 21-6 to give the Billingshurst lad his first victory was either the shock of the century or the scores were written down the wrong way round on the scoresheet. It matters not however as Greenway finished in fourth berth 21 points adrift of Holbrook and 61 ahead of Billingshurst.

Well done to the Bills' Chris Godden for gaining his first league win and well done to his team generally for competing with consistent gusto through the five weeks of the process.

In the New Year, starting on the 10th January, Division A moves into its second phase with the pairs, individual and doubles tournaments

4/12/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division B3, meeting 1): Low Turnout But Titanic Battle

Last night's netball Div B3 first meeting was affected by the late withdrawal of both All Saints teams due to a sickness bug sweeping through the north Horsham school and forcing it to close for a couple of days. Get well soon Sainties. This left remaining teams Heron Way B and Warnham a bit isolated but they made the best of it by playing an extended match of four quarters. A great one it turned out to be as well. Tit for tat all the way and finishing at 7-6 in Warnham's favour. Let's hope for better luck and healthier times when this division next comes together again in the New Year.

29/11/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division A, meeting 4): Southerners Sailing, Greenway Grafting, Bills on the Board

Week 4 of the Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League Division A brought some more good matches. There’s just no stopping Southwater A. They rattled up another maximum haul of 80 points to ensure they stay way ahead at the top of the tree. Yes they’ve played two matches more than all the other teams but let’s not kid ourselves, nobody’s catching the runaway train represented by the crew of Chloe R, playing with a style that suggests she’s auditioning to be the first female 007, Dan P, Zaib RF and Sam A.

Nearest, but still distant, challengers continue to be Southwater’s second string. This was despite them having their non-scoring friendly match during the night and their upper half having to take on the might of their Southwater A counterparts. Callum C and Finn H in the lower half made up for light pickings elsewhere by knocking Billingshurst’s lower brigade for the full 20 points.

Good to see Billingshurst record their first team score on the door with their upper team gaining a draw against improving Greenway. Luca V was the hero of that match with two wins. Josh N did well on his debut but despite pushing both opponents hard just couldn’t manage to tip the match into a victory. Interestingly they did less well against Greenway Lower for whom Blaise W was just too strong.

Holbrook also got their friendly match out of the way, a bit of a non-event as traffic delayed one of the teams and prevented them contesting three of the matches. They may have regretted the traffic wasn’t bad enough to prevent them getting there at all as Southwater A’s teams set about them in the second round of matches on the night. Zac B went close however to breaking the southern stranglehold, losing out on the deciding point versus Sam A.

29/11/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Hockey League (meeting 1): North-South Divide in the Primary Schools Hockey League

On a bitterly cold but dry afternoon last Friday 29 November, 13 teams arrived on the Astro pitch at Tanbridge House School to do battle in the first of three Horsham District Primary School Hockey League meetings. Southwater and North Heath A emerged as the only teams to remain undefeated on the night and will be the ones to watch in the remaining two meetings which take place after Christmas.

The 13 teams were randomly drawn in to two groups with each playing the other teams in the group on the night. In group 1, it was extremely close with four of the seven teams accumulating more than 20 points. North Heath A finished as group winners with 26 points following four victories all by a score of 1-0 and two draws which came against the teams finishing in second and third. The only goal they conceded came in their last game against Castlewood which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Northolmes A secured four wins and a 0-0 draw against North Heath A but their 2-1 loss to Kingslea meant they missed out on top spot and had to settle for second place just a point behind North Heath A on 25 points. Their opening 3-0 victory against Castlewood proved crucial as this turned out to be the only defeat Castlewood suffered all night as four wins and the draw against North Heath A meant they finished on 24 points to claim third place. Fourth place went to Kingslea who finished on 21 points following three wins, two defeats and a draw but this was good enough to see them placed in to the top division in the second league meeting on Friday 10thJanuary.

Leechpool B won their last game of the night 1-0 to help them to 12 points and fifth place. St Mary’s also got 12 points but an inferior goal difference meant they had to settle for sixth. Steyning B found it hard going and were the only team that did not manage to score a goal on the night but a good defensive display meant they were able to draw 0-0 with Kingslea and although they lost the other five games finished on 8 points and will be joining Leechpool B and St Mary’s in Division 2 at the next meeting.

In group 2, Southwater were the dominant force as they went through the night without conceding a goal. Four wins scoring 10 goals in the process and a 0-0 draw against Steyning A saw them top the group with 23 points. Leechpool A came second finishing on 21 points as they won four of their five games with their only defeat coming in a 2-0 loss against Southwater. Steyning A secured 19 points to claim third place with three wins, the 0-0 draw against Southwater and a 2-0 loss in their game against Leechpool and all three of these teams will now pit their wits in Division 1 next time against North Heath A, Northolmes A, Castlewood and Kingslea.

The other three teams in group 2 all finished on 9 points having managed to win one but lose the remaining four games on the night. Goal difference was used to decide the placings and with -7 but having scored three goals on the night, Steyning C were awarded fourth place. Fifth place went to Northolmes B who also finished with -7 but only scored 2 goals on the night and sixth place went to North Heath B who scored 1 goal but conceded 10 to finish with -10 goal difference. These three teams will be joined in Division 2 next time by Shelley School who were unable to play in this first meeting.

A big thank you must go out to the seven umpires from Horsham Hockey Club who came along and volunteered their time to umpire the games on Friday in cold temperatures. The standard of umpiring was excellent and this was fed back by a few of the teams that took part. It was really pleasing to see one of the umpires come back and help who had previously played when he was younger and this was the message I received from his Mum in advance of the event ‘X will see you Friday (it was actually this tournament that inspired him to start playing hockey to start with and he’s never looked back!)’.

27/11/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division B2, meeting 1); Leechpool in the Netball Box Seat

Leechpool Primary School zoomed ahead in the first meetin Division B2 of the Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League. They opened up with a big win over perennial large school rivals Southwater Junior Academy whose B team took a 10-1 opening hit. Then Kingslea's two teams took the brunt of their goalscoring power to the tune of 8-1 and 10-0. Southwater recovered from their early setback to claim two wins against the Kingslea teams, although Kingslea A made them work hard for their 2-0 victory. Kingslea A sit in third after winning the bragging rights against their own B team.

22/11/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Girls Football League (meeting 2): Goal Difference Decides It

Meeting 2 of the Primary Schools Girls Football League went ahead last week and the third and the climax to the process is now in sight. We saw another close competition with some exciting football and tight score lines which has us looking forward to tournament three. Meeting 2 saw three teams remain unbeaten and the top two in both leagues being separated on goal difference. In Division 1 Southwater A and Heron Way fought it out for the top two spots. Although Heron Way won the head-to-head 1-0, it was Southwater A who finished top on goal difference. Steyning A will join them in the top tier at the final meeting.

Leechpool B and Castlewood will also be competing at the top table after a successful second showing. Both teams finished on 21 points with identical wins, losses and draws. They played each other in their final game of the evening, both going in knowing a win could give them first place. After a 0-0 draw it was Leechpool who finished on top with the superior goal difference. Greenway will be the final team competing for top spot at tournament three after managing to accumulate 15 points, which was enough secure third place.

The divisions and some of the scorelines were close and the standings could have ended differently. All the remaining teams will be competing in Division 2 in the final meeting. Although they are not in with a chance of winning it, overall they are still competing to win their division. We look forward to a thrilling finale to wrap up this year's competition.

22/11/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division A, week 3): Blaise of Greenway Glory

Week 3 of the Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League Division A brought some more good matches. Blaise W was on good form for Greenway as part of their lower half, winning three of his four close encounters of a ping pong kind. An improved points haul for Greenway on the night but they still lie well adrift of third place Holbrook. Holbrook slipped back as a consequence of two tight matches against Greenway, one drawn and another lost courtesy of a single bonus point. Oliver Bilotto continues to impress in the Holbrook lower half.

Ben S performed well for bottom team Billingshurst by gaining a win and a drawn share of his other game in the match of the Billingshurst and Southwater B upper halves but unfortunately the Bills just couldn't break their team wins duck. Their lower half came close with a 14-13 points to defeat to their Southwater B equivalents; if Ben S had got one more point to go beyond 10 in his loss to Bobby B he would have claimed a bonus point for the team to have achieved a draw, but it wasn't to be.

Southwater B edged into second spot inspired by Ajaiy's maximum haul in his team's top half but they still remain 49 points behind leaders Southwater A who had another dominant night with Chloe R, Zaib RF and Sam A all going unbeaten through it.

20/11/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League (Division B1, meet 1): Northolmes Netball Joy

Division B1 of the Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League got underway at Collyer's on Wednesday with four teams participating from three schools. Northolmes' two teams enjoyed contrasting fortunes. Their A team won all its games convincingly and did not concede a single goal. Their B team struggled throughout the night though losing all matches heavily with their only crumb of comfort coming with a goal scored against St Andrew's Nuthurst in response to the 10 they conceded. When the two Northolmes teams met the gulf was a 12 goal one.

Shelley had a good night. They contributed to Northolmes B's misery before being pinned back by Northolmes A to the tune of 5-0. However they bounced back with a last game humdinging 11-4 win versus the Nutties which left them in second place.

15/11/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division A, meeting 2): Ollie Proves Hardy

Southwater A consolidated themselves at the top of the A division of the Horsham District Primary Schools League on Friday at Collyer's with four more wins in the second week of the competition. Holbrook are on the rise though as their nearest challengers after picking up three team wins themselves, two against Southwater B's halves who they overtook in the standings, and the other at the expense of Greenway. Greenway and Billingshurst both played out intra-team friendlies as well as matches against the top two teams so they didn't add many points to their total on the night although the fixture schedule should get easier over the remaining weeks. Mind you I've been saying the same about the weather recently and look how that's turned out!

Before settling into a family friendly which the upper half beat the lower half Billingshurst felt the full force of the Southwater A steamroller. Chris G provided solid resistance for the Bills but Sam A was in devastating form. Up top for the Southies Dan P was also imperious but Chloe R only just survived an unexpected stiff test from Ben S on a final point decider.

Holbrook's main man was Oliver B in the lower half. He won all his four matches in fine style on the night and was given good support by Jamie M as his wing man. Zac B and George W also did well on the upper deck, bouncing back after their initial defeat to Southwater B Lower to gain a full house at Greenway Upper's expense despite all the games being tight in scoreline.

Greenway's family friendly showed there's not much difference in strength between their top and bottom halves and both sides of their team equation will be looking to tip the balance their way in the remaining weeks.

8/11/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Girls Football League (meeting 1): Leechpool Set the Standard

The 2019 primary schools girls football league got underway last week with 12 teams involved in this year’s competition. The teams were randomly organised for meeting 1 into two groups and were competing for their place in the top group going into the second meeting. Leechpool A set the bar high  after managing to go unbeaten in the first outing, not dropping a single point or conceding a single goal. Tournament two will see them compete in league 1 along with Kingslea and Steyning B who finished second and third in the group.

Heron way got off to a great start also remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament and only dropping point with a draw against Southwater A who eventually finished second in the group on goal difference. Both teams will be starting in league 1 heading into tournament two along with third placed Steyning A.

The remaining teams were unlucky not to pick up more points and compete for a place in league 1. There were some close games that could have gone either way, which saw some great goals and some resilient defending. These teams will play in league 2 during tournament two but are still in with an opportunity to win promotion back into league 1.

We look forward to seeing what the next instalment brings.

8/11/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Table Tennis League (Division A, meeting 1): Powerful Ping Start By the Southies

Southwater's two teams made a powerful start in the Horsham District Primary Schools League Division A opening at evening at Collyer's. Southwater A's crew went undefeated and their B team were not far behind just suffering two individual match reverses at the hands of Greenway Lower's Blaise W by the narrowest of margins. Greenway emerged from a double helping of Southwater treatment with a creditable 18 points and look forward to some easier evenings ahead. Holbrook occupy third with lower half duo Jamie M and Oliver B doing most of their damage against Billingshurst's lower half. Billingshurst had a tough opener, not managing to register a single individual win on the night although Luca V will rue coming out the wrong side of two final point deciders against both his Southwater A lower half opponents.

Excellent behaviour and focus was exhibited by all players on the night and there was enough first night time left after the team matches to play some informal top table competitions.

6/11/19 - Horsham Primary Schools Netball League (Division A, meeting 1): Southwater Open Up Strong in the Netball

The Horsham Primary Schools Netball League got underway for the season at Collyer's tonight with four Division A matches taking place. Southwater A made an impressive start to their campaign putting both Greenway A and B teams to the sword with great ruthlessness, 15-1 and 18-0 respectively. Heron Way also completed a similar Greenway double to get their season up and running successfully but they were far more gentle in their treatment, beating the A team 5-3 and the B team 6-1.

4/10/19 - Horsham District Primary Schools Football League (Year 3+4, meet 1): Year 3+4s Get Primary Schools Football Underway in Style

After last week's weather related cancellation of the Year 5+6 age group, the Horsham District Primary Schools Football Leagues finally got underway in Horsham Park as the Year 3+4s took to the stage. It was worth the wait as 13 teams provided some excellent games that involved skills aplenty, super enthusiasm and were played with fantastic and fair spirit. Unfortunately the entry for one of the 13, Greenway, had not arrived in advance so they had to make do with playing friendlies on a hastily erected fifth pitch but credit to them they accepted the situation with grace, put on brave faces and made the best of the situation.

Despite ongoing weather uncertainty during the day as it turned out overhead conditions were fair and ground conditions lush and excellent. The format involved an extended round-robin system of all teams playing each other once over the two meetings. Most teams played five matches on the first night, some played six. As well as the overall competition there is a sub-plot at hand to see which team comes out as top large school involved and which one as top small school.

Heron Way had a great night with both its A and B teams performing well. HWA clocked up six straight wins to finish top at the halfway point. Traditional big rivals Southwater A provided stubborn resistance to them at the start only succumbing to a single goal but progressively their momentum increased. The juggernaut only threatened coming off the road in the last round of matches when St Mary’s Horsham had the temerity to take the lead against them with the only goal the Herons conceded all night. Parity was eventually established however late in the second half and from there on in it was one-way traffic in a match that finished 4-1. HWB was also impressive in registering four wins and a draw, only Loxwood cramping their style with a 1-0 win in their opening game.

Loxwood indeed appear to be leading title contenders, winning all of their first night games too to sit second only by virtue of having played a game less. Their victims included a number of large school teams including both Southwater ones; not many teams have done that on a single evening before. Loxwood v Heron Way A is a fixture to particularly look forward to in the second meeting in two weeks’ time.

St Mary’s Horsham was another of the small school big-hitters winning four games but falling to both Heron Way sides and as a result they lie a full seven points ahead of Southwater B going into the second meeting. St Mary’s v Loxwood looks may be a seminal game next time out in seeing who tops the small school standings.

Southwater B head a clutch of mid-table teams that got into double-figure point totals. Goal difference elevates them above St Robert Southwell and Plaistow/Kirdford. Surprisingly Southwater A lie near the bottom of this pack, just behind Castlewood and just above, Leechpool A, another school with a strong footballing tradition and surprised to be seeing more teams above it rather than below it.

Kingslea lie in eleventh without a win but recording two draws and Leechpool B prop up the table; despite losing all their games they played their hearts out and deserve much credit for keeping their heads held high. Well done to Miss Simpson too for her energetic sideline efforts for keeping her team buoyed up to do their best.

Overall player behaviour was exemplary and thanks to parents for spectating in a nice spirit and observing the new rule not to stand between pitches.

MEETING 1 RESULTS

5pts for win, 3 for draw, 1 for loss. 1 extra for losing team that scores 50% or more of opponent's winning score.
